Around 40,000 passengers enjoyed free rides during the first two days of public services on the 6.2km 17-station from Congress Street in Mercado to the city centre, University of Arizona, and Helen Street.

Services will operate at 10-minute intervals during the peak and every 20 minutes at other times. The line is operated by RATP Dev subsidiary RDMT.

The $US 196.5m project was funded with the aid of a $US 63m federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant and a further $US 19.7m from the FTA.

United Streetcar's plant in Clackamas, Oregon, has supplied eight low-floor LRVs for the line. The 20.1m-long vehicle, accommodate up to 180 passengers.
