Based in Stendal Alstom Locomotive Service focuses on locomotive renovation and maintenance of all manufacturers' shunting locomotives, LRVs, regional trains, bogies as well as other rolling stock components. Since the joint venture was formed in 2002, ALS has supplied more than 300 rebuilt V100 diesel locomotives to private operators.

Following the acquisition, Alstom plans to develop new environmentally-friendly three-axle shunting locomotives at Stendal that use up to 50% less fuel than equivalent hybrid diesel locomotives. Four engines will be offered for the shunters, including hybrid technology, which will be launched for the industrial and harbour market following a five-year development period.
