The SD70ACe-T4 locomotive is powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 1010 engine which features lower-emissions and optimised fuel efficiency without using urea. The ac-traction locomotive has an isolated powertrain, radial bogies, individual axle control and an enlarged cab.

EMD plans to have the first locomotives available during the second half of 2016 which it says is earlier than originally planned.

"In 2010, we acquired Electro-Motive," says Mr Billy Ainsworth, who is president and CEO of EMD's parent company Progress Rail. "Over the past five years, our goal has been to take the EMD locomotive product line to the next level in terms of innovation and sustainability." Ainsworth says the new locomotive combines the expertise of EMD, Progress Rail, and parent company Caterpillar.
