Established in 2009 as a 50:50 joint venture between KTZ and Transmashholding, Russia, LKZ assembles 1520mm-gauge TE33A locomotives at its plant in Astana, which has capacity to produce up to 100 units per year.

The TE33A was developed by GE Transportation from its ES44ACi for the North American market.

LKZ has built 300 of the locomotives for KTZ, and has also supplied smaller batches of TE33As to customers in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Estonia, Mongolia, and Tajikistan.
