The system will be tested on one of Green Cargo's fleet of 62 single-cab type Td locomotives, which were built between 1968 and 1987. These units have recently been repowered with MTU Series 4000 engines as part of modernisation programme intended to extend their useful life by 15 years. This has already reduced fuel consumption by 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by 75%, compared with the original power unit.

Green Cargo says the stop-start system will be evaluated in winter and summer conditions before a decision is made on whether to roll it out across the remainder of the fleet.
