Rebuilding of the locomotives to Newag’s type 15D specification (PKP Cargo class ST48) involves construction of a new body and driver’s cab, the replacement of auxiliary equipment and the braking system, and the installation of microprocessor control, diagnostics systems, and CAN buses.

The locomotives will also be equipped with a new engine compliant with UIC Stage III emissions standards (equivalent to EU Stage IIIA).

As part of the contract, Newag will supply software and specialised tools for engine diagnostics and maintenance.

The rebuilt locomotives will be delivered between October 2018 and May 2021.

PKP Cargo signed an initial contract with Newag for 30 ST48 conversions in May 2013, with deliveries taking place between September 2013 and February 2016. The type was authorised for operation in Lithuania in February 2015.

PKP Cargo says the latest contract is part of its strategy to build market share and improve the efficiency of its locomotive fleet.
