The engines feature exhaust gas recycling, common rail injection and diesel particulate filters to comply with European Union Stage IIIB emissions regulations. They are also equipped with two-stage turbochargers to achieve high-charge air pressures while minimising particulate emissions.

Each 16-cylinder engine has an output of 2.4MW to enable the locomotives to reach a maximum speed of 160km/h. The units are expected to enter service next year.
