TransNamib placed a $US 22.7m order with GE for the 1067mm-gauge locomotives in September 2015. The 1.72MW six-axle units are equipped with GE’s BrightStar microprocessor control system and were assembled at GE Transportation’s plant in Contagem in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The fleet will be deployed on sulphuric acid trains from Tsumeb to Arandis, which will be operated by TransNamib under a 10-year deal awarded in 2015 by Dundee Precious Metal Tsumeb.
