The 5.6MW unit is equipped with a 240kW auxiliary diesel engine, which allows it to operate independently on non-electrified branch lines or sidings.

Bombardier is expected to deliver two further class 187s to BLS Cargo in the middle of this year.

BLS Cargo says the new locomotives will give a competitive advantage because it will no longer need to rely on third-party operators to provide diesel traction at freight terminals.
