The closure is expected to last until October 4at the earliest. For much of September services have been disrupted or cancelled on the route as the number of refugees seeking to reach Germany has been greater than the capacity of the rail network.
All long distance services between Munich and Salzburg have been suspended. Some services are operating either east of Salzburg and terminating there or solely in Germany terminating in Munich.
Regional services operated by Meridian are operating east of Munich but are terminating just short of the border at Freilassing, while Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has suspended Salzburg S-Bahn services between Salzburg-Liefering and Freilassing. A cross-border bus replacement service is being offered although there have been reports of long tailbacks as many people have resorted to crossing the border by car. Berchtesgadener Land Bahn (BLB) services are operating normally between Freilassing and Berchtesgaden but none are running to or from Salzburg.
Through ÖBB Railjet services from Budapest and Vienna to Zürich which are routed via Rosenheim and run non-stop in Germany are unaffected and are operating as planned although some may be diverted from the usual route via alternate and much slower routes in Austria.
Services between Germany and Austria via Passau are operating normally, although the need for border controls means journey times will be longer than normal.
