The contract begins in December 2017 and ends in December 2029 and covers all non-electrified routes in the Bavarian Allgäu region together with connections to Augsburg and Ulm.

The contract was offered in two lots. Lot 1 comprised stopping services connecting Ulm, Augsburg, Pfronten-Steinach and Lindau/Oberstdorf. New low-floor DMUs will be ordered for these services.

Lot 2 specified the use of second-hand tilting DMUs, as no suppliers are currently able offer this type of rolling stock. Part of the route to be operated with these trains (between Munich and Memmingen) will be electrified by 2020, when new EMUs will be introduced.

DB Regio will also use the existing fleet of class 612 tilting DMUs on the Lot 2 routes from Augsburg to Oberstdorf and Lindau, and Augsburg – Memmingen – Bad Wörishofen and prior to electrification between Munich and Memmingen. On the Munich – Memmingen route older locomotive-hauled trains will also be replaced.

From December 2020, the Munich – Oberstdorf/Lindau services currently operated by Netinera subsidiary Vogtlandbahn and branded as Alex will also switch to tilting DMUs operated by DB Regio at the same time as electrification of the line from Geltendorf via Memmingen to Lindau. This will release class 612s and enable the introduction of a fundamentally new timetable concept in the Allgäu region.
