Total rail passenger trips increased 2.5% to to 2.63 billion passenger journeys in 2016. Long distance ridership, almost all of which is attributable to DB Long Distance, grew 5.3% in 2016 to 138 million journeys.
Growth in the long distance bus market slowed considerably from 25% in 2015 to just 4.7% in 2016, with passenger numbers reaching 24 million journeys.
Tram and metro networks recorded growth with ridership increasing 2.4% to 3.98 billion journeys.
