Russians award Ural Polar rail contract

THE Czech subsidiary of OHL Group, Spain, has won a €1.95bn contract to build the 390km Ural Polar railway in northern Russia.

The scheme, which will be funded by the Czech Export Bank and Russian banks, is being developed by Yamal Railway which is owned by Russian Railways (RZD), Russia's national gas company Gazprom, and Polar Urals Corporation.

The single-track line will run from Obskaya via Salekhard to Nadym. The four-year project is divided into three parts: Nadym - Salekhard, a 2.5km bridge over the River Ob, and Salekhard - Obskaya.
