The works will be carried out in two stages. The first covers the upgrade of the Vranjska Banja - Ristovac (17.7km) and Bujanovac – Bukurevac (13.7km) sections of the line with work set to conclude in September. During the upgrade, regional train traffic will be limited while international trains to and from Macedonia and Greece will be cancelled.

The second stage focuses on the modernisation of the 15km Vinarci - Djordjevo section. The work will last from September 2016 to May 2017 and international trains will run as scheduled.

RZD International, a subsidiary of Russian Railways (RZD), provided a $US 26.4m credit to ZS for the project.
Freight services have already been restored on the Mala Krsna - Velika Plana line, another section of Corridor 10 upgraded using Russian funds. Two other modernised segments, Ruma - Golubinci and Sopot Kosmajski - Kovacevac, opened in September 2015.

• Serbian state electricity company Elektroprivreda Srbije has ordered two 140km/h 7MW 25kV ac electric locomotives from Chinese manufacturer CRRC Zhuzhou. The locomotives will be used on Elektroprivreda Srbije's network between the open cast Kolubara mines and the Nikola Tesla power station in Obrenovac.
