SJ says the subsidiary is a natural extension of its existing operations in Norway, which include Stockholm - Oslo, Gothenburg - Halden and Stockholm - Narvik cross-border services, albeit with Norwegian management and staff.

Mrs Berit Kjøll, executive vice president of Huawei Norway and former CEO of Oslo airport express operator Flytoget, has been appointed chairman of SJ Norway. Kjøll will lead the recruitment of a management team for the new company.

Tendering for passenger contracts will begin with two service groups in different regions of Norway. Package South encompasses Oslo - Stavanger long-distance services together with regional services on sections of the route, while Package North, includes Oslo - Trondheim long-distance electric services, and diesel operated services on the line from Trondheim north to Mo-i-Rana and Bodø. Package South is expected to start in December 2018, while Package North will begin in December 2019.
