Under contract, which runs until 2020, Trenitalia will receive 225m a year to operate the network, which includes Leonardo Express services from Rome Termini to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino.

The contract calls for investment of €539.2m over the next four years, including 20 new Alstom Jazz EMUs for Leonardo Express and regional services (five of which have already been delivered), 114 locomotive-hauled Vivalto double-deck coaches from Hitachi Rail Italy, and the refurbishment of 46 TAF double-deck EMUs.

Trenitalia says this investment will reduce the average age of the regional rolling stock fleet in Lazio from 17.5 years to 13 years.
