According to the detailed project report for Phase 1, the 750V dc standard-gauge trains will have a maximum speed of 80km/h and stainless steel bodyshells. Each 2.9m-wide three-car train will accommodate up to 450 passengers under normal conditions and 764 passengers in crush loading.

Phase 1 of the network is due to be completed by December 2018 and comprises a 19.4km east-west line from Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam, which will have 17 stations, and an 18.5km 15-station north-south line from Motera Stadium to Gyaspur. Daily ridership is forecast to be around 496,000 when the first phase opens in October 2018, rising to around 670,000 by 2021 and 1.12 million by 2031.

The acquisition of rolling stock for Phase 1 is being financed through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
