The project is being tendered as a PPP, with a 30-year long concession. The winning bidder will be selected on the basis of the lowest-cost offer.

The Reais 3.5bn ($US 1.7bn) project comprises the 5.6km northern extension of Line 1 from Acesso Norte to Pirajá, which will have three stations, and Line 2, which will run for 24.2km from an interchange with Line 1 at Bonocô Avenue to Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport and Lauro de Freitas.

Construction is expected to start in 2013 and both lines will be completed in 2016.
