BRASILIA's metro operator Metro-DF is planning to open Latin America's first entirely sustainable metro station next month following the installation of photovoltaic panels at Guariroba station on the network's Green Line.

Energy collected from the solar panels will power lighting and facilities at station platforms and offices, with any surplus electricity sold to Energy Company of Brasilia.

The initiative is the result of a project between Metro-DF and a Chinese company and is in accordance with the Metro Sustainable action programme launched in April by federal district governor Mr Rodrigo Rollemberg.

Other schemes that Metro-DF is working on under the programme include collecting and using rainwater to wash trains.
