CAF has been chosen to provide 19 low-floor Urbos 3 LRVs in a deal worth around £40m. The new vehicles will replace the existing fleet of 16 AnsaldoBreda T69 trams supplied for the opening of the line in 1999, allowing frequencies to be increased and providing additional capacity for the 1.8km extension from Birmingham Snow Hill to New Street station, which is due to open 2015.
midland-metro-urbos3.jpgThe five-section LRVs will accommodate around 200 passengers, compared with around 156 on the current trams, with improved accessibility for people with disabilities, including two wheelchair spaces.
The vehicles will be assembled at CAF's plant in Zaragoza and deliveries will begin in 2014.
