The line will add five stations to the network taking it to 45km and 44 stations and is expected to cost DKr 8.6bn ($US to complete. It will branch off the Cityringen at Sønder Boulevard, utilising part of the link to the new depot before continuing along the harbour front to reach an interchange with S-Train and main line services, including the new Copenhagen – Rinsted high-speed service, at Ny Ellebjerg. The line will be financed through the sale of development sites owned by the Copenhagen municipality through its subsidiary By and Havn and will open in 2023.
Construction of the junction box is already underway to avoid disturbing services on the Cityringen which is due to start operations in 2018.
The revised law reduces the state's ownership of By and Havn, of which the metro company is a subsidiary, from 45% to 5%, with City of Copenhagen now holding a 95% stake. The revision also permits the addition of a Nordhavn branch to the Cityringen which will add "several stations" as well as construction of a road tunnel beneath the harbour to connect this developing area with the motorway network.
