The extension was inaugurated by housing and urban affairs minister, Mr Hardeep Singh Puri, and chief minister, National Capital Territory, Mr Arvind Kejriwal. India’s minister for chemicals and fertilizers and parliamentary affairs, Mr Anant Kumar, and the Ambassador of Japan to India, Mr Kenji Hiramatsu, were also present.

“Metro serves a very useful purpose because it takes the pressure off private means of transport and brings more people to an efficient, green mode of public transport,” Puri says.

The 8.1km extension, which has six stations including interchanges with the Yellow Line and the Violet Line at INA and Lajpat Nagar, expands the Pink Line to 29.6km. The initial 21.6km section from Majlis Park to Durgabhai Deshmukh South Campus opened on March 16. The third, 14.3km segment from Trilokpuri to Shiv Vihar will open later in August while the final 15km stretch connecting Lajpat Nagar to Trilokpuri is expected to open in September.
