A new fully-automated driverless peoplemover has opened in southern Shanghai to connect the metro with a large residential area.

The 6.6km Puijang Line runs from the southern end of Line 8 at Shendu Highway to Huizhen Road. The double-track line is elevated and has four intermediate stations.

Shanghai Shentong Metro awarded the CRRC Puzhen Bombardier Transportation Systems (PBTS) joint venture a Yuan 808m ($US 128.5m) turnkey contract in 2015 for the peoplemover including the supply of 44 Innovia APM 300 rubber-tyred vehicles. Trains are controlled by Bombardier’s Cityflo 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) system.

The Puijiang Line is operated and maintained by Shanghai Keolis, a joint venture between Shanghai Shentong Metro (51%) and Keolis (49%), under a seven-year contract. Trains will operate at 3min 20s headways during peak periods reducing to 6-minute intervals off-peak.
