Serco Docklands has operated the DLR since April 1997 under two separate concessions. The extension of the current contract starts in April and is worth around £100m.

Serco will continue to operate the network under the terms of the 2006 concession agreement, which includes operation of train services, maintenance of rolling stock, and infrastructure maintenance on the core network. This excludes maintenance of the Lewisham, Woolwich, and Stratford International lines, which are maintained under separate contracts.

TfL invited expressions of interest last July for the next operating concession, although a start date for the contract has yet to be announced.

DLR carried 86.1m passengers during 2011-12, although it is on course to break this record in 2012-13 thanks to the London Olympic and Paralympics games, when traffic doubled on the 38km network. Ridership is expected to reach 100 million next year.
