ISRAEL’s Committee for National Infrastructure has approved a plan by Israel Railways to quadruple the 85km Tel Aviv - Haifa main line and increase the maximum speed to 250km/h.

The project will involve a mixture of new construction and upgrading the existing line. It includes new tunnels between Haifa Hof Ha-Carmel and Haifa Central, and a new alignment between Zickhron-Ya'akov, North of Binyamina, and Hadera West. The existing line through Binyamina will be retained for local services following complaints that the planned new station on the new alignment would be too inconvenient.

New stations will be constructed at Zickhron-Ya'akov, Hadera West, and Or Akiva.

The new and upgraded sections will be designed for 250km/h operation which will entail the elimination of all level crossings. This will cut the Tel Aviv - Haifa journey time from 49 to 30 minutes.
