FOLLOWING approval by its supervisory board, Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has signed a Euros 300 million contract with Bombardier for 99 low-floor Flexity Berlin LRVs. The order, which is the first to be placed under a framework agreement signed in 2006 for up to 210 LRVs, comprises 40 long (40m) and 24 short (30.8m) unidirectional vehicles, as well as 35 short bidirectional vehicles.
The long LRVs will be used on lines M4 and M8, while the shorter vehicles will be used across the network. Deliveries will commence in May 2011, and will allow BVG to begin replacing its fleet of 237 Tatra trams, which although recently-modernised do not comply with forthcoming standards on access for passengers with disabilities.
A second order for 33 Flexity Berlin LRVs is expected to be placed next year.
