The 52.1km Red Line from Jafza/Limitless to Rashidiya runs on viaduct
for 44.1km of its length, with a 4.7km underground section between
Burjuman and City Centre. The fully-automated line is equipped with
Thales SelTrac IS communications-based train control and NetTrac
central control systems, providing a minimum headway of 90 seconds.
Construction
has taken just 55 months, although the cost of the project has almost
doubled from Dirhams 15.5 billion to Dirhams 28 billion and just ten of
the line's 29 stations will be ready when public services begin on
Monday. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Mr Mattar Al
Tayer says some stations are still being fitted out while others, such
as Jebel Ali, are ready for use but will not open until later in the
year because the property developments they have been built to serve
are not yet complete.
Last week it was announced that the opening of
Dubai's second metro line, the 14.6km Green Line from Al Jaddaf to Palm
Deira, Dubai International Airport and Al Qusais 2 has been delayed by
three months. Commercial services will now start in June 2010.
