The elevated section runs from M G Road in the city centre to the eastern suburb of Baiyappanahalli, and forms part of an 18.1km east-west line. A two-line 42.3km network is under construction of which 6.7km will be underground.

The metro is equipped with Alstom's Urbalis automatic train control system which will have a design capacity of 40,000 passengers/h/direction. Alstom is also responsible for providing an operations control centre, a back-up control centre and two depots.

The initial fleet of 150 cars is being supplied by a consortium of Hyundai Rotem, Korea, Mitsubishi Electric, Japan, and BEML, India.
