REVENUE on Indian Railways (IR) grew by 12.15% to Rs 247.56bn ($US 5.55bn) for the period April 1 to June 30, which is the first quarter of the current financial year, compared with Rs 220.75bn for the first quarter of fiscal 2010.

Freight performed the best with a growth rate of 12.6%. First-quarter revenue was Rs 168.1bn compared with Rs 149.3bn in the first quarter of 2010.
Passenger income rose by 10.5% from Rs 61.9bn in first quarter 2010 to Rs 68.4bn this year. The total number of passenger journeys reached 2 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2011 compared with 1.94 billion during the first quarter of fiscal 2010, representing an increase of 5.3%.
