The double-track line will have 63 bridges, five tunnels totalling 9.5km and eight stations. Two types of passenger services are envisaged: an express service taking about 2h 30min to cover the 350km from Tel Aviv to Eilat and a stopping service. Passenger traffic is estimated at 3.5 million journeys a year. The line would also carry freight such as phosphate, potash and imported cars.
Israel issues RFI for new line to Eilat
ISRAEL's Ministry of Transport and Road Safety has invited requests for information (RFI) for the construction of a 170km line to the Gulf of Aqaba port of Eilat. The minister, Mr Yisrael Katz, says the purpose of issuing the RFI is to gauge interest by the private sector in designing, funding, building and operating the new line.
