KAZAKHSTAN Railways (KTZ) has awarded a $US 100 million contract to Alcatel-Lucent to modernise its telecommunications network to bring it up to international standards.
KTZ expects the new system to improve signalling, communications throughout the network, and allow remote monitoring of infrastructure to permit diagnosis of problems and reductions in track maintenance costs. KTZ will also be able to offer telecommunications services to third parties
The project will extend the length of the railway's fibre-optic network to 4000km.
