IRJ at InnoTrans, Berlin: Kinki Sharyo is poised to launch a new catenary-free low-floor LRV designed specifically for the US market. The LFX-300 uses overhead electric power to charge lithium ion batteries, giving allowing the vehicle to operate independently for up to 8km. When the vehicle reaches an electrified section, the batteries are rapidly recharged through the catenary and regenerative braking.

A pre-series vehicle has been assembled by Kinki Sharyo in Japan and will begin dynamic testing with a US light rail operator in late November or early December. The first demonstration runs will take place in Dallas in February and Kinki Sharyo says it will be ready to begin production next year.

The standard 20m-long LFX-300 accommodates 106 passengers with 28 seated.
