NEARLY half a century after the last tram ran from Los Angeles Eastside to the city centre, dignitaries including Los Angeles Mayor Mr Antonio Villaraigosa inaugurated the 9.7km extension of the light rail Gold Line from Union Station to Atlantic on November 14.
More than 50,000 people travelled over the line when public services started the following day, and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) charged a nominal $US 1.25 fare to travel the length of the 32km line from Pasadena. The journey time between Union Station and Atlantic is 17 minutes and there are eight stations, two of which, Soto and Mariachi Plaza, are underground.
The $US 898 million extension has taken has taken five years to complete.
