Metro 5, which is headed by Astaldi, and also comprises Ansaldo STS and AnsaldoBreda, was awarded the concession to build and manage the 6km, seven station Bignami to Garibaldi first phase of Line 5 in 2007. This section will open later this year with the latest contract serving as a direct extension of the line adding an additional 10 new stations.

Construction is set to take 57 months to complete with the line scheduled to open to coincide with Expo 2015. The project is being funded by a mixture of sources including the Ministry of Infrastructure which is contributing Euros 391 million, the city which has made a Euros 83 million pledge as well as private backers.

Astaldi, which is responsible for civil works, has a Euros 440 million share of the contract. Electrical systems will be provided by Ansaldo STS for Euros 105 million, while AnsaldoBreda, which will supply the automated, driverless trains, has a Euros 51 million share of the contract. Milan transport operator ATM and Alstom also have stakes in the consortium.

Once completed, Metro 5 will operate the second phase of the line for 25 years and 7 months, with revenues anticipated to exceed Euros 1.3 billion.
