MORE THAN 92,000 passengers welcomed light rail to Seattle on the weekend of July 18-19, when the 22.5km line from Westlake Center to Tukwila line was inaugurated with free rides for local people.
The $US 2.3 billion line runs through the unique 2.1km Downtown Tunnel, which is used by both buses and LRVs. Light rail services operate at 7.5 minute intervals at peak times.
A 2.4km extension to from Tukwila to Seatte-Tacoma Airport will open in December, and a $US 1.9 billion 5km underground branch from Downtown Seattle to University of Washington will be completed in 2016. The network is projected to carry 42,500 passengers per day by 2020.
