The five-section vehicles are 32m long, 2.5m longer than the existing Bombardier LRVs. The London Borough of Croydon will contribute £3m to the purchase and for alterations to existing stops and the depot to accommodate the longer vehicles.
The new LRVs will strengthen capacity on Tramlink which has seen traffic increase from 18.6 million journeys in 2001-02 to 27.8 million in 2010-11.
