RIDERSHIP on the Taipei - Kaohsiung high-speed line reached an all-time high of 3.7 million passengers last month, according to figures announced this week by Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC).

During the first seven months of the year passenger numbers totalled 23.72 million, an 11.3% increase over the same period in 2010.
The 345km line opened in January 2007 but ridership initially struggled to meet forecasts, largely due to a prolonged local economic slump and more recently the global downturn. In 2009 THSRC was taken over by the Taiwan government having accumulated debts of $NT 400bn ($US 13.8bn).
