During the first seven months of the year passenger numbers totalled
23.72 million, an 11.3% increase over the same period in 2010.
The 345km line opened in January 2007 but ridership initially struggled
to meet forecasts, largely due to a prolonged local economic slump and
more recently the global downturn. In 2009 THSRC was taken over by the
Taiwan government having accumulated debts of $NT 400bn ($US 13.8bn).
