THE Thailand Transport Ministry is seeking cabinet approval for a 60km, Baht 25bn ($US 701m) railway linking Phuket International Airport to the Chalong intersection.

If built the route would have a top speed of 100km/h and 23 stations. It could be opened by 2021 should a feasibility study prove successful. Funding is likely to be provided by a public-private partnership, and companies in China, Korea and Europe are said to have expressed interest in the project.

Ridership estimates are 68,000 passengers per day in its first year of operation and generate revenues of Baht 5.2bn per year.
