Thailand to invest $US 2.7 billion in rail

STATE Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to start work this year on 11 rail projects worth Baht 87.5 billion ($US 2.7 billion), following provisional approval by the Thai government. The Ministry of Transport is studying another 10 projects worth a further Baht 98 billion.
One project involves track doubling between Chachoengsao and Kaeng Khoi at a cost of Baht 11.3 billion. Track upgrading is planned on five sections of line, while safety improvements are to be undertaken at 200 level crossings.
SRT plans to purchase 50 diesel-electric locomotives at cost of Baht 6.5 billion. A batch of 56 locomotives is to be fitted with new engines and have air-conditioning installed in their cabs. This will cost more than Baht 3 billion.
