THE European Rail Industry Association (Unife) has appointed Frenchman Mr Philippe Citroën as its new director-general, replacing Mr Michael Clauesecker who announced his intention to step down in late 2010.

Citroën, who will begin his new role on July 1, has been CEO of Systra for the past nine years. He was previously strategy director at French National Railways (SNCF) between 1999 and 2002, and manager and chief of staff of RATP in Paris between 1993 and 1999.

Unife has also confirmed that Alstom Transport's new president, Mr Henri Poupart-Lafarge, will serve as chairman of the association. Poupart-Lafarge will replace Mr Philippe Mellier at Alstom who announced his intention to join diamond firm, De Beers on May 16, and is switching from his current role as president of the company's Grid division as part of a major company reorganisation. Poupart-Lafarge joined the company in 1998 and has held various roles including CFO between 2004 and 2010. He begins his new job on July 4.
