THE concessionaire of Newcastle Tyne & Wear Metro DB Regio has selected Wabtec to refurbish the network's fleet of 90 two-car trains in a deal worth £25.2 million. The refurbishment programme will run until 2015 with the work being carried out at Wabtec's Doncaster facility.

The project will allow the fleet to continue operating until 2025, although procurement of new trains is expected to begin at the end of the decade.

The train refurbishment is part of the £400 million All Change programme, which will see modernisation of half the network's 90 stations together with the renewal of track, electrification and communications systems.

The 79km network has been operated since April 1 by DB Regio, which has been granted a seven year concession with an option for a two-year extension by regional transport authority Nexus.
