CANADIAN national passenger operator Via Rail has awarded Bombardier a $C 54m ($US 42.3m) contract to upgrade 17 of its oldest coaches to meet current and future accessibility standards.

Under the contract, Bombardier will modernise 17 stainless-steel bodied coaches built in the 1950s, which are used on Via’s long-distance routes.

Each coach will be equipped with two wheelchair lifts, two accessible wheelchair spaces with anchoring devices, passenger information screens (including in the washrooms), and an accessible washroom. The work also includes the installation of Wi-Fi, interior design improvements, and upgrading of the heating system and electrical components.

The programme is due to be completed by 2020.
