CANADIAN National (CN) ended 2012 by completing its merger of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E) into its Wisconsin Central (WC) subsidiary.

The merger of the two railways, which intersect at Leithton Junction north of Chicago, will simplify CN's corporate structure and operations in the United States.

The EJ&E runs in a 318km semicircle through suburban areas around Chicago, and was acquired by CN in 2009. WC became part of CN in 2001 and links Chicago with Wisconsin, the upper Michigan peninsula and southern Ontario.
