Currently Path passengers travelling from Lower Manhattan to the airport need to change at Newark to an NJ Transit regional/commuter train to Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, which connects with the AirTrain monorail.

The proposed Path extension would run parallel to Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and connect with the monorail, serving the airport and providing improved connections from Lower Manhattan to Harrison, Jersey City, and Hoboken.

After evaluating technical and compliance issues, HNTB will develop a precise cost estimate for the project. The Port Authority anticipates that the extension will cost around $US 1.5bn and take five years to complete, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2018.
