While most of the funding in the programme is allocated to highway projects, several major rail schemes are set to benefit. These include:

  • $US 60m to re-establish passenger services on the Chicago – Rockford - Dubuque line, with a new station in South Elgin
  • $US 585.1m to acquire up to 160 new double-deck commuter EMU cars for Metra Electric services
  • $US 222m towards the reinstatement of inter-city services between Chicago and Moline on the Chicago – Quad Cities – Iowa City corridor, and
  • $US 132.6m for the Englewood Flyover, a key part of the Create Programme, which aims to reduce Amtrak, Metra, and rail freight congestion in and around Chicago.

The plan allocates $US 1.85bn to public transport projects and $US 2.7m to main line rail in the 2015 financial year, which starts on July 1 2014.
