However, two other contracts for 20 double-deck emus and 40 dmus have not been awarded because the bidders did not meet Trenitalia's requirements for cost and delivery schedule. These trains are being ordered to provide new rolling stock for contracted regional services.

The single-deck emus trains will be manufactured at Alstom sites in Italy, including Savigliano, Sesto San Giovanni (Milan), and Bologna. The design will be a variant of Alstom's Coradia Meridian emu, which entered service last month on Trenord's Lombardia Express services between Milan, Bergamo, and Varese.

The new trains will be delivered to the regions of Abruzzo, Calabria, Lombardy, Marche, Umbria, Lazio and Veneto. In Lazio the trains will be used on shuttle services between Fiumicino airport and Rome Termini.

The order is part of a €3bn investment in the Trenitalia regional fleet, which includes orders for 350 double-deck coaches and 150 locomotives.
