The contract includes options for up to 60 additional vehicles, which can be exercised at any time before 2026. Bombardier’s share of the contract is worth €97m.

The first two pre-series vehicles are due to be delivered to Gothenburg for trials in 2019 and will each complete 20,000km of test running before final approval.

The unidirectional trams will be classified M33 and the first batch will be supplied as 29m and 33m-long units. Options in the contract will enable Gothenburg Tramways to order longer vehicles (40-45m) and add additional sections to the initial batch if required.

Gothenburg Tramways currently operates a fleet of 263 trams, the newest being the 65 M32 Sirio vehicles supplied by AnsaldoBreda from 2004 onwards.

The ciy's 82km standard-gauge tram network comprises 13 lines and carries around 108 million passengers per year.
