A €50m contract has been awarded by Metroselskabet, Denmark, to Hitachi Rail Italy for an additional eight driverless trains for operation on lines M1 and M2 of the Copenhagen light metro.

The new trains will be delivered by 2020 and will add to the 34 existing trains supplied by AnsaldoBreda. The trains are based on the 39 trains which Hitachi is currently building for the City Ring Line, which is due to open in 2019, but with some modifications to run on the existing network. This includes a new internal layout designed to increase train capacity.

The contract also includes on-board ATO signalling and communications equipment which is being supplied by Ansaldo STS.
