DB says it will also upgrade the interior specification to include a new lighting design and increased luggage space. According to DB the changes are intended to reflect growing demand for long-distance rail travel in Germany.
DB signed a framework contract with Siemens in May 2011 for up to 300 ICx trains, with an initial firm order for 130 sets, which are due to enter service from 2016. Two types are planned, including a 230km/h seven-car version and a 250km/h 10-car variant.
The ICx sets will replace locomotive-hauled trains and the ICE 1 and ICE 2 fleets.
